Lamborghini’s new Huracán STO was first presented to the British public at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Said to draw inspiration from and learn techniques from the Huracán Super Trofeo Evo and successful GT3 racing models, this is the more track-oriented version of the Italian brand’s smaller model.

The STO (which comes from the Super Trofeo Omologata) is actually a road-approved version of the race car that has won the Daytona 24 Hours three times.

“The concept of the project was how can we capitalize on all of this? [racing] know-how, all that experience and creating something that is missing from the Huracán family portfolio, ”Lamborghini R&D manager Maurizio Reggiani told Autocar. “It’s a car that can be dedicated to follow the activity in a purist way. . “

Sitting above the Huracán Performante, the STO is powered by its naturally aspirated 631bhp V10 – exactly the same as its sibling. However, it weighs 43 kg less than the Performante, mainly thanks to the removal of the four-wheel drive system, but also thanks to the use of carbon fiber for 75% of the car’s body panels.

Notably, the rear fenders use a carbon “sandwich” formation, using 25% less carbon material while maintaining the same stiffness. There are also magnesium wheels, and even the windshield is 20% lighter than that of the Performante.

But the STO is more than just lighter weight. As its racing body suggests, aerodynamics play a central role. Reggiani said the “extensive” wind tunnel work helped the car “to have the right balance in terms of exceptional downforce but with reduced drag on the race car.”

To this end, new support and cooling hood ducts and a splitter are added to the front and, like the racer, the hood, fenders and front bumper are all linked as one piece of body. A redesigned underbody and rear diffuser, while race-derived NACA air intakes on the sides improve cooling.

Other additions include an air intake and baffle design sitting on the engine cover to increase the cooling of the V10. At the top of this assembly is a ‘shark fin’ design to improve yaw stability in fast turns while straightening airflow to the rear wing.

The fender itself, single slit with a double fender, is manually adjustable to change the car’s aerodynamic balance by up to 13%, Lamborghini claims.
