Marcus Rashford shared a heartbreaking post saying ‘all I can say is sorry’ after his failure on penalties in the Euro 2020 final, as messages of support were left on a disfigured mural of him .
The England striker took to Twitter after being the victim of racist abuse online following his kick, as England were beaten by Italy at Wembley on Sunday.
He said: “I don’t even know where to start and I don’t even know how to express how I’m feeling right now. I’ve had a tough season, I think it’s clear to everyone at see and I probably walked into that final with a lack of confidence. “
“I always backed myself up for a penalty but something didn’t feel quite right. During the long preparation period I was saving myself a bit of time and unfortunately the result was not what I wanted.
“I felt like I was letting my teammates down. I felt like letting everyone down.
“A penalty was all I was asked to contribute for the team. I can score penalties in my sleep, so why not this one? It’s been coming back to me time and time again since I was hit the ball and there probably isn’t a word to describe how it feels.
“Final. 55 years old. 1 penalty. History. All I can say is sorry. I wish it had turned out differently. While still saying sorry I want to scream my teammates. This summer has been one some of the best camps I’ve “been through and you all played a part in that.
