The A36 is closed in both directions between Bathampton and Norton St Philip following a serious collision, Highways England said.
Avon and Somerset Police are at the scene.
Motorists are asked to take an alternate route.
Highways England said: “The A36 is closed in both directions between the A366 near Trowbridge and the A4 near Bath due to a collision.
“Emergency services, including Avon and Somerset Police, are there.
“The information from the scene indicates that this closure will be extended.
“Traffic is diverted by local roads.
“Delays are likely as this closure approaches, with additional travel times also expected on the detour routes.”
