Waterstones urges customers to wear face masks from July 19 UK News

Leading bookseller Waterstones has said it will “encourage” customers to wear face masks in stores from July 19.

They also asked customers to continue to observe in-store social distancing rules.

From Monday July 19, the legal obligation to wear a face mask indoors or on public transport will be abolished.

However, the government “expects” and “recommends” people to wear face coverings in crowded and confined spaces where you come into contact with those you don’t normally meet, such as on public transportation.

Businesses also have the freedom to decide whether they want to abolish face masks and social distancing rules themselves.

Posting on social media this week (July 13), Waterstones said: “After restrictions are lifted on July 19 across England, we will see new government guidelines.

“Given our closed boating environment, we encourage our customers to wear face masks and respect social distancing, respecting the safety of staff and other book enthusiasts. ”

At the time of writing, the Twitter post has received over 20,000 likes and over 2,000 comments.

Big Green Bookshop wrote: “Do it Waterstones”.

Another wrote: “Many of us have not yet received our second dose of the vaccine and vulnerable people are forced to protect themselves.

“Thank you for being attentive to others. ”

One commenter added, “I’m glad you applied the masks.

“It relaxes me and a lot of people to know that a business cares about the safety of its customers. Keep Waterstones Strong! ”

However, not everyone was so supportive of the movement.

The Talk Radio Breakfast Show host wrote: “I make a point of buying books in my room. @water stones rather than ordering from Amazon because I want bookstores to thrive, but if I go to your store and someone on staff asks me to wear a mask, you will lose my business forever.

Another Twitter user said, “Wrong decision, you will lose a lot of customers.”

“Amazon must be thrilled tonight,” wrote another.

Will you continue to wear a mask after July 19?
