Barnet’s Whetstone Wanderers celebrates 30 years of history UK News

Barnet’s largest grassroots football club, Whetstone Wanderers FC, is celebrating 30 years of providing football in the community by calling on residents to help them raise much-needed funds.

The money raised will go to a brand new all-weather lit pitch scheduled for 2022 at the club’s home in Southover – Woodside Park Club.

The club’s home does not have an all-weather surface, with practices and games during the winter months being hostage to cancellations due to bad weather.

Like many grassroots community football clubs across the country, the past year has been incredibly difficult with Covid-19 preventing the club from hosting its annual Summer 6 fundraising tournament.

Founded in 1991, the club has grown into the largest grassroots community club in the Borough of Barnet, serving the community and surrounding areas with over 600 boys and girls on over 40 teams.

President Alan Kelsey said: “We are proud to celebrate 30 years of providing football to the community. The club is a place where children and adults can create memories and achieve success; where leadership, winning and losing are all learned in a safe and happy environment.

“It’s no secret that the pandemic has had a huge impact on our physical and mental health, not to mention the restriction of access to hubs and clubs like ours, and our ability to invest in facilities. . With the help and support of the community, the money raised will be used to ensure that we continue to play an important role in providing football for young people and a thriving place for the community to come together. ”

The club’s graduates include Nick Tsaroulla, Crawley’s scorer in Leeds Utd’s FA Cup loss, Charlie Ruff, who scored in the FA Trophy final last season, and Marcus Edwards, formerly of Tottenham Hotspur and now with the Portuguese club Vitoria.
