Second Tesco for Somerset city as supermarket giant confirms plans Bath City News

Plans are under development for a second Tesco store in Bridgwater.

The supermarket chain has confirmed that the first plans are being made to open a Tesco Express store off Kings Road, between the A38 and M5 near junction 23.

The store would join Express’s current location at Pollard Road as tenders for the town of Sedgemoor.

Tesco has confirmed that the new store will seek to open to the public in 2022.

Proposals for the signage that would accompany the new store were approved this week by Sedgemoor District Council, giving rise to suggestions that a new store was in sight for the site of the roundabout that connects Kings Road to the A38 Bristol Road.

Opportunities to lease other business units on the site were also announced, with a brochure published by Tesco and Maclaren and Partners real estate advisers announcing opportunities to lease a second, smaller business unit on the site.

The brochure says: “The development occupies a prominent commercial position being highly visible from both Kings Drive and Kings Road, the main arteries of this commercial and residential location in Bridgwater. “

Planning documents accompanying the signage request also indicate that an 18-space car park is currently part of the plans for the Tesco store, along with a new access path exiting Kings Road.

Tesco has now confirmed plans for a second store in the city, which are currently “in the early stages”, with an opening date of 2022 currently scheduled.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We are planning to open a new Express store in Bridgwater. Our plans are currently in the early stages and we have not yet started work on the store, but we hope to open to customers in 2022. “

Several housing plans have already been approved on the land surrounding the proposed new store, with separate applications for housing projects comprising 80 and 57 houses respectively having been approved in recent years.
