Wilko announces popular face mask change in UK stores UK News

Wilko has announced that he is extending a popular face mask program for three months.

The program, which allows buyers to drop off used disposable face masks so that they can be recycled, will now be in place until the end of September 2021.

This extension follows an initial three-month pilot project and will see the service remain in place at the original 150 participating stores across the UK.

The home and garden retailer said it expects 400,000 masks can be recycled through the program, which equates to 966kg of single-use plastic.

Those who wish to participate should simply go to the nearest participating Wilko store as part of their regular shopping and safely drop off their used single-use face masks in the special collection bin.

Once full, these bins are then taken away by recycling specialists ReWorked, who together with Metrisk Ltd, Scan2Recycle, partner with wilko on the program, the first of its kind on the UK’s main street.

The masks collected through the program are broken down into raw fibers which can be sustainably transformed into products ranging from other safety materials for businesses, to construction materials and even to sustainable and quality public space furniture.

Jérôme Saint Marc, CEO of Wilko, said: “We know that our customers care about the environment and this program has proven just how much.

“We are delighted that this is such a success and that our customers and our team members are helping reduce waste in their communities, our partners are helping to recycle waste and that we can bring it all together in Our stores.

“It’s a small victory that really makes all the difference.

Although masks are no longer a legal requirement, wilko still recommends face coverings for team members and clients in high traffic indoor spaces.

The family-owned retailer seeks to respect individual choices while providing a sustainable solution to the elimination of single-use masks.
