Kayakers Bexley and Lewisham clinch gold at London Youth Games UK News

The real Olympics may be in Tokyo right now, but a local canoe club in south-east London has had its own share of sporting success this week, winning 13 incredible medals at a youth event. .

Young paddlers from the Meridian Canoe Club took part in the London Youth Games kayaking event on Saturday, and some impressive individual and team sports garnered an impressive collection of medals.

The canoe club represented the boroughs of Bexley, Greenwich and Lewisham in the flagship event, and the group won five gold, five silver and three bronze.

The group is based at Lac Danson and at the Crook Log leisure center, and welcomes all paddlers, young and old, beginners and experienced.

The senior sprint and senior slalom gold medal was won by James Hurtt representing Bexley, the junior sprint and junior slalom gold was won by Arina Kontchakov representing Lewisham and the team slalom gold medal a was won by Bexley.

The youngsters were drawn to their success by Malcolm Blowers, Roman Kontchakov and Hilary & Peter Lawrence.

The London Youth Games are an annual multisport event held in the capital and offer people aged 7-18 the chance to compete in around 30 sports each year.

This year’s paddle sports section was held at Fairlop Waters in Redbridge, with the whole event coming back into action this summer after missing out on 2020 due to Covid-19.

For more than 40 years, the London Youth Games have used the power of competitive sport to create life-changing opportunities for young Londoners.
