Callum Borg and partner Jessica Glover, both 24, and their two-year-old son were asleep when their apartment in Walkden was destroyed in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Callum said he locked his partner and child in the bedroom for their safety and ran down the stairs around 4 a.m.
He said he was then confronted in the living room by a group of four men armed with machetes and axes.
Callum suffered cuts to his arms and the group fled with the Skylar family dog - a pocket bully.
The dog’s owner said the thugs fled from the scene in a white BMW vehicle.
Detective Constable Joseph Morris, of the Force’s Salford District, said: “We understand this is a distressing incident for those involved, as well as for the community.
“We are thoroughly investigating the circumstances of what happened.”
