United announced shortly before 5 p.m. Friday that it had secured a deal with the Italian team that was subject to the agreement of personal terms, a doctor and a visa.
It was the climax of a remarkable turn of events after reports just hours earlier suggested that the 36-year-old five-time world player of the year was set to sign for rivals Manchester City.
United said in their announcement: “Everyone at the club looks forward to welcoming Cristiano back to Manchester.”
It is understood that United will pay 15 million euros (£ 12.85 million) plus eight million euros (£ 6.85 million) in possible add-ons.
Ronaldo scored 118 goals in 292 United appearances between 2003 and 2009 before leaving Old Trafford for Real Madrid, where his successes included four Champions League successes.
Ronaldo had also been linked to Paris St Germain, but City, after missing the signing of Harry Kane from Tottenham, had appeared as favorites to secure his services.
It is understood that the champions were offered the player but, after considering a possible deal, they decided it was not something they wanted to pursue.
They felt that Ronaldo was not a good fit in Pep Guardiola’s squad and, despite Kane’s frustration, the manager himself is quite happy with the players he already has.
For their part, United were not looking to sign Ronaldo, but seized the opportunity when it became clear they wanted to leave Juve.
