If you want a fun car for not a lot of money, what’s your best option? This is what the Autocar competition, Britain’s best affordable driver’s car, aims to answer each year. Welcome to the 2021 edition.
We have six driver cars to test. Five are practical hatchbacks that also aim to please while they’re at it, and they’re all new for 2021.
The most recent of all is the Hyundai i20 N. It takes over the Ford Puma ST, the latest Volkswagen Golf R, a Cupra Leon 300 and a BMW 128ti. Then there’s our wild card, the Caterham Super Seven 1600.
Car prices range from under £ 25,000 to almost £ 40,000, and we’ve driven some of Britain’s finest roads to help us make up our minds. We are in the Highlands: but there can only be one (see what we did there).
