BTCC 2021: Sutton takes title from Thruxton Car News

Two-time champion Ash Sutton claimed his fourth victory of the season in the British Touring Car Championship at Thruxton to take the lead in the points race.

Laser Tools Racing Infiniti Q50 rider kicked off signature load training to win the second of three races at the Hampshire Speedbowl.

Josh Cook continued to build his reputation as King of Thruxton with his seventh BTCC track victory. Adam Morgan won a BMW duel with Colin Turkington to win the final.

Cook maintains Thruxton’s form

BTC Racing Honda Civic Type R rider Cook moved up from third on the grid to the lead at the start of race one. He then dominated, keeping Jake Hill (Ford Focus ST) at bay.

It continued its incredible form on the track: seven of Cook’s 11 BTCC victories came at the Hampshire venue, including three of two visits this year.

Tom Oliphant (BMW) finished third, ahead of Rory Butcher (Toyota Corolla), Sutton and poleman Dan Rowbottom (Civic Type R).

Sutton is charging again

Sutton is the toughest loader in the BTCC, and he proved it again with his race to victory in race two.

Starting in fifth place on the grid, Sutton gradually worked his way in order with a series of decisive moves, then stealthily followed leader Cook. With the latter in full swing, he was always going to have a hard time, and on lap 11, Sutton passed him on the first corner.

Cool retained second place, with Oliphant winning his second podium of the day. With main title rival Tom Ingram (Hyundai i30 Fastback N) finishing fifth, Sutton’s title lead has now grown to 30 points.

Morgan ahead of Turkington

After finishing eighth in race two, Morgan grabbed pole position for the final and held on for the win in a chaotic race with three safety car periods.

It wasn’t easy: Morgan was followed from start to finish by quadruple champion Turkington, but despite a late slip at the chicane he managed to rise to the challenge. Senna Proctor (BTC Racing) took third place.

The next event will take place in Croft, Yorkshire on September 19th.
