More than 50 people have been arrested in a two-week campaign targeting drug drivers in London.
Agents from the Met’s Road and Transport Policing Command carried out dedicated patrols across London focused on stopping drivers under the influence of drugs.
Between Monday August 16 and Sunday August 29, officers arrested and tested 241 people – of which 53 were arrested.
The patrols also educated drivers about the risk of driving under the influence of alcohol in an effort to reduce fatalities and serious injury crashes.
PC Jeremy Dunlop said: “There is absolutely no reason for anyone to drive a vehicle after taking drugs. It is reckless and totally unnecessary.
“I want to reassure the public that although this campaign is over, we remain committed to ending this behavior and removing unsafe drivers from London’s roads.
“Our message is clear: it is your responsibility to drive safely.
“Don’t put yourself or someone else in danger. If you do, you can expect to face the full consequences of your actions in court.”
In June 2019, an 85-year-old pedestrian was run over and killed by a driver who had taken cocaine before getting behind the wheel.
Reuben Armstrong was on his way to his sister’s house when the collision occurred. Last month, Tina Nowland was jailed for more than four years at Kingston Crown Court.
Caroline Lashley, Reuben’s niece, said: “As soon as you start taking things like cannabis, cocaine, speed, whatever, you have no control.
“You drive a vehicle. You are on the road. You put yourself and others in danger, which my uncle basically ran into. My uncle had the right to live.
“You can’t always be accountable to others, but you can be accountable for yourself. ”
