One of the advantages of an old Land Rover is that it fits everywhere: shopping, going to school, taking a photo shoot, the opera, a farm, a fashion show … From the Alps to Kensington, you will not miss a change of scenery. in a Defender. Like an original Mini, this is the lowest common denominator in the automobile: it splits into any company.
However, defenders seem particularly at home in the British countryside. That’s why I took mine for a short break in Yorkshire as pictured above. Pretty, yes? Yes. We had a lot of fun. Principally.
Fast forward a few hours from that photo and, well, that’s a complicated story, but let’s just say an administrative error and a little emergency forces me to spend the night in the car.
In some cars, even in many Land Rovers, stretching out the back for a nap is fairly easy. But this is a Defender 90, which is about the length of a new congested suburb. Ford Fiesta, only with much more space devoted to the engine.
I get in the back and try out a few sleeping positions. Lying back against a seat back with my legs straight is good for snacking and taking in the view but not great for a nap. Finally, I settle down curled up in a fetal position with a backpack for a pillow and a picnic mat for a quilt. It could be worse.
But, I guess, waiting – hoping – to doze off might be better. I like the idea of a motorhome, especially an old 4×4, to be able to climb a mountain and stay there on a whim.
I look at different ways to convert the 90 into a land tourer, then consider how much easier it would be in a long wheelbase 110, but then decide what I really want is a 101 Forward Control. Always have. Probably always will be.
