A total of 24 secondary schools in the North East have been classified as “exceptional” by Ofsted.
The Office for Standards in Education inspects and assesses schools across England to judge the quality of education students receive.
Ofsted’s four-point scale ranges from “exceptional” to “insufficient”, although some may be placed in “special measures” if improvements are to be made quickly.

In its most recent inspections, Ofsted rated 24 secondary schools in our region as “outstanding” and praised their level of education.
Below we have listed all of the top rated schools. However, some of them have not been fully inspected for several years.
Northeastern schools classified as “exceptional”
Newcastle
Catholic High School of the Sacred Heart
A full inspection was carried out in November 2013 and the school, based in Fenham, was found to be outstanding in all major areas.
Gosforth Junior High Academy
An inspection took place in September 2011, when Ofsted said: “Gosforth Junior High Academy is an exceptional school.
“Students of all abilities and backgrounds do well from a wide range of starting points. By the end of Grade 8, student results are at least above, and sometimes well above, what is expected for their age. This is particularly the case in English and mathematics. “
A monitoring visit took place in May 2015 when the main objective of the inspectors was to determine whether the academy’s safeguard arrangements met the requirements.
The inspection found that “leaders and managers have strong systems in place to ensure student safety and ensure that the climate that permeates the academy is friendly, warm and supportive.”
St Cuthbert High School
This school received an “exceptional” rating following a visit by Ofsted in April 2016 and the inspectors praised the level of education.
Sir Charles Parsons School
A visit by Ofsted in March 2015 enabled the school to receive an “exceptional” grade.
A brief inspection in January 2019 followed, when inspectors said: “The management team has maintained the exceptional quality of education in the school since the last inspection.”
North Tyneside
Valley Gardens College
Valley Gardens was deemed exceptional after a full inspection in June 2013.
Ofsted praised a number of aspects of the school and said, “Students receive an exceptional education at Valley Gardens Middle School. This includes their personal development as well as their academic success.”
Whitley Bay High School
The school was classified as exceptional following an inspection in May 2013.
Ofsted noted, “Whitley Bay High School provides an exceptional education for its students. She seeks to help students grow into confident, sensitive and thoughtful adults, and she succeeds in this goal.”
Percy Hedley School
The school, which caters for children with additional needs, was rated exceptional in all major areas after an inspection in March 2013.
A brief inspection was then carried out in March 2018, when Ofsted said, “This school continues to be exceptional.”
South Tyneside
St Wilfrid’s College RC
The South Shields school was awarded the exceptional mark after an inspection in October 2018.
Ofsted said: “Leaders and governors are relentlessly determined that all students realize their potential. No stone is left to chance.”
Epinay Business and Enterprise School
This school in Jarrow, which provides instruction to students with learning disabilities, underwent a full inspection in March 2018 and Ofsted noted: “The quality of teaching and assessment is exceptional.
“Teachers know the specific needs of students and plan extremely well to spark their interest and develop their skills. As a result, student progress is impressive.
Gateshead
Haskel School
This is an independent Jewish special school in Bensham. A visit to Ofsted in December 2017 resulted in an “exceptional” rating.
Their reports stated, “Students behave exceptionally well and leaders ensure that their personal development is exceptional.
Dryden School
The Low Fell school, which welcomes students with learning disabilities, was deemed “exceptional” after an inspection in June 2015.
Another visit took place in November 2019, when Ofsted concluded: “The Dryden School continues to be an exceptional school.”
Cardinal Hume Catholic School
The rating “exceptional” was awarded following a visit in January 2014.
Inspectors said, “Cardinal Hume Catholic School prepares its students very well for their future by making them caring and highly educated individuals.
Emmanuel College
After a full inspection in May 2013, the college was rated “outstanding”.
