Aldi to open cashless store in London Business

Aldi’s biggest rivals, notably Tesco and Morrisons, are both experimenting with similar technology and there are plans to roll it out if buyers respond well.

Aldi shoppers will scan a smartphone app when they enter the store and, upon checkout, will receive an email receipt and be automatically billed using the card of their choice.

It is understood that the technology works by monitoring what customers take off the shelves, with no product analysis required, much like Amazon’s Fresh stores.

Giles Hurley, CEO of Aldi UK, said: “We are always looking to redefine what it means to be a discount retailer, and the technology involved in this trial will provide us with a wealth of lessons.

“We are really excited to be testing this concept which will allow customers to choose from our range of quality products, all available at great prices, and then leave the store without having to pay at checkout. “
