John Lewis has withdrawn from sale a children’s evening dress named “Lollita” after receiving criticism for stocking it.
The Chi Chi London Lollita evening dress was on sale for children aged three to 11 on the retailer’s website for £ 50.
The name is similar to the 1955 novel Lolita, written by Vladimir Nabokov, which describes how a middle-aged teacher abused a 12-year-old girl.

TV presenter Victoria Coren Mitchell tweeted about the dress to her followers.
She said, “If you had to think of a name for a kid’s party dress, what wouldn’t you call it?” “

Another person added, “I couldn’t buy it with that name. Crazy to call it that. The dress is very pretty, but I couldn’t.
A Twitter user said it was different from the novel due to the presence of two “ls” in the name.

Chi Chi London is a fashion brand that stocks their clothes with the department store.
The dress also does not appear on the company’s website.
A spokesperson for John Lewis said: “We have withdrawn this product from sale as soon as it was brought to our attention and we apologize for the inconvenience caused.”
