However, Rolls-Royce has expressed its commitment to purely electric transmissions, going against the tendency to use hybrids as a bridge product. So it won’t electrify its existing conventional fuel powertrains, unlike rival firm Bentley, which now has three plug-in hybrids in its lineup. Müller-Ötvös promised a “smooth transition” from gasoline to pure electric and that the V12 will be on the books for “a long time”
Nonetheless, it will leave by 2030 when the company goes all-electric, ending 126 years of combustion-engine car production, a lineage that began with the 10-hp two-cylinder – designed by Henry Royce and marketed by Charles Rolls – in 1904.
The Specter will be handcrafted at Goodwood on the same production line as the current Rolls-Royce models. The company proudly proclaims that it will not be based on an existing BMW Group model.
Questions therefore remain about the transmission of the Specter. Rolls-Royce has not revealed its intention to introduce its own EV motor technology, but it has also not confirmed that it will use propulsion units provided by its parent company.
A likely candidate for the installation would be the new twin-engine setup to be rolled out in BMW’s new top-of-the-line iX M60, which promises to deliver over 600bhp on both axles, likely upgrading the SUV to 2, 5 tons of rest at 62 mph in about 4.0sec. Such power would be a perfect fit for Rolls-Royce’s first electric vehicle, as it would be well placed to mimic the attributes of its smooth, high-performance V12.
