Free New Year’s Tube trip canceled by London Mayor Sadiq Khan Business

Diageo, who owns Guinness and Johnnie Walker, and travel search engine Kayak are among the companies that have footed the bill for free New Years trips in the past. When a sponsor was not found, TfL funded the cost.

TfL said metro services will still run through the night this year.

A spokesperson said: “Following the catastrophic impact of the pandemic on TfL’s finances, TfL will unfortunately not be able to offer free travel on New Years Eve.

“Services on the transport network will run through the night, ensuring people can take advantage of all London has to offer and return home safely.”

A government spokesperson said: “We have repeatedly shown our commitment to supporting London’s transport network during the pandemic, providing more than £ 4 billion in emergency funding to Transport for London.

“We will continue to discuss any further funding requirements with TfL and the mayor, and any support provided will focus on restoring TfL on a sustainable financial basis in a manner that is fair to taxpayers across the country. “
