The Ford Mustang has added a limited-run California edition with exterior design changes and upgraded equipment, with prices starting at £52,105.
The Mustang California Edition is based on a 1967 Shelby GT hatchback coupe prototype, named the California Special. The original car featured an all-black grille, fog lamps and side racing stripes, along with a Shelby-inspired spoiler and new rear side vents.
Offered only in a convertible body, the major changes to the Mustang are design-based. It gains an ebony black honeycomb grille, black, red and gray lower side stripes, unique badging, 19-inch wheels and California Special decals. Each model also bears a “California Special” logo that is only visible in direct sunlight.
Ford says the car’s aerodynamics have been improved, with the fitment of a larger front splitter as well as optional rear side vents.
Inside, the Mustang California Edition features heated and cooled front seats finished in gray faux suede. The model also gets a 12-inch digital driver display and an aluminum-finished dashboard.
Meanwhile, nine exterior colors are available, including Grabber Blue and Cyber Orange, which contrast with the model’s black convertible top.
The Mustang California Edition only comes with a 5.0-liter V8 engine, which produces 443 hp and 390 lb-ft. The car can do 0-62 mph in 4.5 seconds and all models come with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
“The California Special is an important part of Mustang heritage in America and it symbolizes so much what Mustang stands for: driving pleasure and the freedom of the open road,” said Matthias Tonn, chief program engineer. for Ford Mustangs.
“These ideals resonate just as strongly with driving enthusiasts in Europe, so it’s time customers here could experience the California Special’s unique blend of style, performance and driving pleasure.”
