Bedford Hockey Club teams pick up points against University of Birmingham Bedford News

Bedford’s Men’s 3s play St Albans

There were points for the top two teams from Bedford Hockey Club, each facing the University of Birmingham. The ladies’ 3-0 victory puts them within 6 points of the table top Sutton Coldfield, who were held to a draw by the students of Loughborough. Bedford hopes to take more points this weekend at Broxbourne.

The men, meanwhile, after end-to-end action and tit-for-tat goals appeared to be heading for defeat as the final whistle approached, to snatch a 4-way draw with Birmingham thanks to a Penalty Corner converted in the last seconds of the match. They face Loughborough next weekend at the Chester Road ground in Bedford.

A 1-0 win over Blueharts keeps the 2 ladies third in their division, although the men, who would have hoped for a win over bottom table Shefford & Sandy, failed to perform that day and finished 3-1. They hope to get back to their game this weekend when they host Chelmsford.

The club’s two third XIs were in fine form, with the men winning St Albans 3-1 and the women’s 7-0 dominance over Letchworth on Saturday and 3-1 victory on Sunday, over Berkhamsted & Hemel, seeing them take second place in the table , just three points clear of top table Stevenage, but one game less.

The 4 ladies still cling to second place in their division, although they have struggled in recent weeks and lost 1-0 to Royston. They will need to up their game if they are to secure a win over top-table St Albans this weekend. It was a good result for the men, meanwhile, their 3-2 win over Southgate keeping them in third place, with hopes of further points against Blueharts on Saturday.

The 5 ladies’ ascendancy continues and promotion is surely guaranteed, after their 11-0 hammering of Rickmansworth, taking the season’s total goals to 75, with just 8 against. The 6, however, playing in the same division, lost 5-1 to a strong St Albans side and will face another tough game this weekend against Letchworth. The 6 men nearly lost their lead against their opponents St Albans but just managed to hold on to secure a 5-4 win.

After several difficult weeks, the Men’s Vets are back in shape and their 3-1 victory over MBDA will give them hope of repeating their performance against Bishops Stortford this weekend.

It was yet another successful weekend for the Club’s Masters teams, with the Women Over 35s heading into the semi-finals of the England Hockey Tier 1 Championship. Their match against the Harleston Magpies ended at 2 and thus ended in a fierce penalty shootout, with Bedford securing their place in the semi-finals after goalkeeper Kez Surman made 2 fantastic saves.

A place in the final is the reward for the Ladies Over 55, after a blistering 8-0 win over Chichester. The final is set to take place in Nottingham on April 30 when Bedford takes on Ben Rhydding.
