Man held by mental health service after evacuation from Southmead Hospital Bath City News

The man arrested following the incident at Southmead Hospital yesterday morning (March 10) has been taken into the care of mental health services.

Emergency services were called to hospital after a man claimed to be in possession of explosives within the A&E department.

Road closures were put in place and patients were evacuated as a precaution in the presence of the explosive ordnance disposal unit.

They examined a number of bags before declaring the area safe, allowing A&E to reopen a few hours later.

The 50-year-old has since been detained under the Mental Health Act and is being assessed.

A statement released by Avon and Somerset Police said: “A man arrested in an incident at Southmead Hospital has been cared for by the mental health service. Emergency services have been called to hospital yesterday morning (Thursday March 10) after a man claimed to be in possession of explosives within the A&E department.

“A cordon was put in place while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit was present. They examined a number of bags before declaring the area safe, allowing A&E to reopen. A man, in his 50s, was arrested.He has since been detained under the Mental Health Act and is being evaluated.

“As stated yesterday, we do not believe this incident to be terrorism related and we appreciate the patience and support of the public while this incident has been dealt with.”
