HSBC will close 69 branches this year, including two in the North East.
The bank says it is closing branches due to the shift of customers from in-person banking to online banking. Less than 50% of HSBC customers use its branch network. HSBC says it hopes to redeploy 400 affected employees into new roles within 15 miles of their homes.
HSBC in Newgate Street, Bishop Auckland will close on August 23, 2022. HSBC in Hartlepool will close a week later on September 1.

Jackie Uhi, head of branch network at HSBC UK, said: “The way people use their banks is changing – which the pandemic has accelerated. Our branches continue to support people with their more complex banking needs, but the way we can do this has also evolved, with the addition of banking hubs, community pop-ups and continued use of the postal network.
“Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach for branches, this is an approach based on how different customers choose to bank in different regions. We know that the majority of our customers prefer to do much of their daily banking online or via mobile, so we are removing locations where we have another branch nearby and there is a significant reduction in the number of customers using face-to-face in-branch service.
“This will allow us to invest in locations where our customers continue to use the branch network, including updating technology and renovating branches.”
He said the move was part of a wider “transformation agenda” that will see him launch community pop-ups, new self-service machines and digital customer support. The group will also renovate branches in key locations, which it says will allow the bank to better meet the online banking needs of customers.
