HSBC Borehamwood branch among 69 to close this year UK News

HSBC’s Borehamwood & Elstree branch will be among 69 to close this year, the bank has confirmed.

There have been numerous bank closures in recent years, with heads of major banking firms saying people are visiting multiple branches less and switching to online banking.

As a result, the Borehamwood Shopping Park branch will close on August 16 this year.

When moving to the internet, HSBC promises there will be more varied services for customers, such as community pop-ups, self-service machines and continued use of the postal network.

HSBC says average footfall at its banks has fallen by more than 50% since 2017.

Jackie Uhi, head of branch network at HSBC UK, said: “The way people use their banks is changing – which the pandemic has accelerated.

“Our branches continue to support people with their more complex banking needs, but the way we can do that has also evolved, with the addition of banking centres, community pop-ups and continued use of the postal network.

“Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach to branches, this is an approach based on how different customers choose to bank in different areas.”
