Ferrari’s Leclerc beat Verstappen by 0.123sec in qualifying for Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix, with team-mates Carlos Sainz third on the grid tomorrow.
Lewis Hamilton is fifth for Mercedes, with teammate George Russell starting the season opener in ninth. Red Bull’s Sergio Pérez took fourth place.
A big change in regulations for this season has left the title battle wide open, with the cars radically revised in a bid to deliver closer racing.

Alfa Romeo’s Guanyu Zhou is making his Forumla One debut after impressing in Formula 2 for the past three years. He is China’s first full-time F1 driver and, as well as being encouraged by his home country, a part of Yorkshire will be watching his progress this year.
The 22-year-old moved to Sheffield from his hometown of Shanghai in 2012 and started racing for Strawberry Racing UK, a karting team founded by Paul Spencer in 2001.
At his request, Zhou was known as Joe while in Steel City and the young man attended the prestigious Birkdale School. A signed photo of Zhou still hangs in the Strawberry Racing office.
