London Mayor Sadiq Khan aims to rebuild trust with Met Police UK News

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has promised to “restore faith in the police” after the unveiling of his new policing and crime plan.

The new plan was released following consultation with more than 4,000 Londoners, victims of crime, community groups and businesses.

It sets out the main priorities and objectives for policing the capital over the next three years.

Although Mr Khan said his ‘number one priority’ was to make London safer, much of the plan is devoted to the ‘determination to drive the necessary change and reform within the Met Police’.

This follows the unraveling of a series of scandals which led to the resignation of Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick as the search for her successor begins.

Mr Khan said: ‘When trust is eroded, it is more difficult to tackle crime, with victims not reporting the crime and witnesses being discouraged from coming forward when they see criminal activity.’

In the plan, a number of incidents were highlighted, including the murder of Sarah Everard by Met Constable Wayne Couzens and the revelation that officers at Charing Cross Police Station sent racist and misogynistic messages to each other .

The Mayor added: “These issues must be confronted and resolved – not only for the benefit of Londoners, but also for the tens of thousands of dedicated, caring and professional police and staff who have been gravely let down by the behavior and appalling misconduct. others.”

Part of the plan’s measures to restore public confidence is increased scrutiny of the Met’s disciplinary processes and the development of community-led training for officers.

Ensuring that the main objective of the plan to make London safer is achieved, Mr Khan reiterated that “we will continue to focus on reducing violent crime and tackling their underlying causes”.
