One person taken to hospital after two-vehicle accident closed the A1 near Morpeth UK News

A patient has been taken to hospital after a serious accident on the A1 in Northumberland.

Emergency services were called to a collision between two vehicles on the southbound A1 at around 11.48am Thursday near Clifton, Morpeth. Police closed the road to traffic in both directions, causing chaos for drivers in the area.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and treated two people, one of whom was then transported to Northumbria Specialist Urgent Care Hospital in Cramlington for further treatment.

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said: ‘We were called at 11.48am to a road traffic accident involving two vehicles on the southbound A1 at Clifton, Morpeth.

“We dispatched a team from our Hazardous Area Response Team and a double-crewed ambulance. Two patients were treated at the scene and one person was taken to Northumbria Specialist Urgent Care Hospital.”

The A1 was closed in both directions between the A697 (Longhorsley exit) and the Hebron exit for approximately two hours. This affected traffic primarily between Morpeth and Alnwick.

A diversion was in place until the recovery of the vehicles involved could take place.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: ‘At 11.50am today (Thursday) we received a report of a collision between two vehicles on the A1 just after exiting the A697 near Morpeth.

“Emergency services responded and both drivers were treated at the scene. The road has since reopened.”

A spokesman for the Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service said: “We received a call from the ambulance service about this two-vehicle crash at around 11.50am. Three units attended the scene. Firefighters left at 1:15 p.m. and the road has since reopened.”

The A1 fully reopened to traffic around 1:50 p.m.
