Labor MP Dawn Butler has been diagnosed with breast cancer UK News

Brent Central Labor MP Dawn Butler has revealed her cancer diagnosis following a routine mammogram.

Butler, 52, added that the breast cancer cells were discovered at a very early stage, so it was something she would “go through”. However, she had to take time to fully recover.

The MP continued: ‘It all stopped like it does when you hear the dreaded C-word – it’s a shock but early diagnosis means it’s something I will go through and get over. The NHS caught my cancer early, the operation was a complete success and I will make a full recovery.

“However, I now have to take time off work for my recovery. Everyone who knows me knows that I’m a workaholic and love what I do – but unless I listen to medical advice and recover well, I won’t be able to perform at my best.

“I would like to thank Parliament, Labour, local members and my team for their support throughout.”

Butler concluded his statement by thanking the NHS and its “incredible workers”. While receiving treatment at the Royal London Hospital, she said she saw “firsthand how much pressure the NHS is under.”

She added: “The Royal London seemed full, people were waiting in chairs in A&E for beds, staff were exhausted in the NHS and many were suffering from PTSD.

“Covid-19 has cost them a lot.

“So many people have missed appointments (many through no fault of their own), results are delayed and surgeries postponed.

“If we are to show our appreciation for the amazing NHS workers and rebuild our health service, we need to invest properly in the NHS, both structurally and in the very people who keep it running.”
