Dangerous biker jailed after young man’s death in A269 crash Brighton News

A YOUNG man has been killed after a motorcyclist crashed into a lamppost while drunk and on drugs.

Joel Vinten, 27, was the passenger of a black Yamaha motorbike when it crashed on the A269 Ninfield Road, Bexhill at around 10.30pm on March 12, 2020.

The biker, Jack Stockdale, now 28, was going over the speed limit when he lost control of the bike and ran off the road.

Stockdale was taken to hospital with serious injuries and blood tests revealed he was still over legal alcohol and drug limits six hours after the incident.

Joel, from Bexhill, was airlifted to hospital but died four days later.

Stockdale has now been jailed for causing death by reckless driving while exceeding alcohol and drug limits and without insurance or a licence.

After Joel’s death, his mother Donna, speaking on behalf of his family, said, “Joel was a much loved son and brother.

“We are all deeply saddened by this terrible news, as are his many friends, and we are extremely grateful for all the support we have received.”

CCTV from earlier in the evening confirmed that Stockdale, of Paradise Walk in Bexhill, had been drinking in a pub in Sidley, but not with Joel.

Witnesses to the accident reported seeing the motorcycle speeding around a 30mph corner before leaving the road.

In addition to the six-year custodial sentence, Stockdale has also been banned from driving for seven years and must pass an extended new test if he wishes to re-apply for a licence.

In handing down Stockdale’s sentence, Her Honor Justice Laing QC said: ‘You were ten times over the cocaine limit and well over the alcohol limit.

“You were aware of the effect the drink and drugs had on you and the pub owner told you that you had had enough and it was time to leave.

“It’s unbelievable that ten minutes later you’re riding a motorbike with a passenger.

”The lives of those who loved him changed forever.

“This case is yet another powerful reminder of a driver’s responsibility when taking control of a vehicle.”
