Review: Sam Fender performs a sold-out show at the Brighton Center Brighton News

STARTING a show with an apology could easily bode ill for some musicians – but not for Sam Fender.

The Geordie singer-songwriter had an emergency visit to a downtown dentist before taking the stage at the Brighton Center on Wednesday night.

The 27-year-old said that despite “inner cries” after dentistry work, he had been high on drugs and was ready to rock.

“Drugs are on the way. Don’t worry, I don’t take illegal drugs. I just do medicine at the dentist,” he clarified to the sold-out crowd.

After an electric start, Sam sat down in front of a piano draped in the Newcastle United flag and sipped a cup of tea.

Singing emotionally through the vapor of his brew, he and his seven-piece band picked up the pace, encouraging Brighton to show off their mosh-pit abilities.

His response to the sites attempt – “Brighton is serious then.”

Sam, best known for his hit single Seventeen Going Under, took the time to stop the set several times to check out some of the worst fan wear in the crowd, which was dotted with Newcastle United shirts.

“It’s supposed to be our little one, so it’s fucking mental,” he said of their upcoming shows at the SSE Arena in London and the Metro Radio Arena in hometown Newcastle.

“We walked past this venue when we played the Great Escape Festival a few years ago, and Dean said I was wondering if we’d ever play here – and here we are,” he added.

“We are having the best time of our lives these last few weeks. Just enjoy being back – that’s what it’s all about.

Ending with an encore of Seventeen Going Under and Hypersonic Missile, fans found themselves singing their hit records as they walked out of the venue and into the streets.
