POLICE have issued a public warning following a wave of credit card scams.
Arun Police said they received several reports of people calling local residents pretending to be the police and asking for bank details and money transfers.
Police are urging the public to remain vigilant and report this activity to the police.
“We urge people to be vigilant as over the past week we have had several reports of people calling local residents claiming to be from Hammersmith Police Station as their bank and credit cards have been used for activities fraudulent,” an Arun police spokesperson said. .
“They were then asked to provide their bank details or transfer a large sum from their account.
“It’s a scam.
“The police will never call you to tell you to check your PIN, withdraw or transfer money, buy high-value goods or have a courier come to your house to collect these items.
“If you receive a call like this, hang up the phone and report it. If you provided bank details, please notify your bank.
Last month, Adur and Worthing Police issued a warning about fake emails claiming to raise funds for Ukraine.
Nearly 200 reports of imitation emails have been passed to the UK’s National Fraud Reporting Center – some even claiming to be from former Ukrainian heavyweight boxer Wladimir Klitschko.
Police and Action Fraud encouraged anyone who received the fake fundraising email to forward it to their “phishing” email address.
Email phishing is a type of social engineering in which an attacker sends a fraudulent message designed to trick someone into revealing sensitive information to the attacker.
