The new Honda Civic Type R set a new lap record for a front-wheel-drive car at Japan’s Suzuka Circuit ahead of its official launch later this year.
Pictured in the same distorted red and black livery he was seen in testing last year, he covered the 3.6km circuit in 2min 23.120sec – 0.873s faster than the previous record holder, the Civic Type R GT Limited Edition.
We still don’t know how the new hatchback will perform, but the broken record suggests it could gain some power.
Official acknowledgment of the development of a new Civic Type R was first declared last October, with Honda confirming that the next iteration of its Volkswagen Golf R rival would launch in 2022.
The Civic Type R is now said to be “ready for Nürburgring testing”.
Honda’s official image confirms that the new Renault Megane RS rival will not be radically different from its predecessor on the outside. The overall body shape, with its low and wide stance, saloon-style boot lid and large rear spoiler, is familiar, while distinctive triple-outlet exhaust pipes and red brake calipers offer another nod. look at its performance potential.
A close look at our spy photos reveals the spoiler features a new raised mount, while the smaller lip spoiler on the trunk lid no longer appears to dissect the rear window. Other visible changes include a lower shoulder line, lower hood line and lower headlights, as expected from the reveal of the standard Honda Civic hatchback ahead of its European market launch in 2022.

Honda has accelerated its electrification plans with the aim of electrifying all of its European sales by 2022, but notably this objective only applies to the brand’s “consumer” products. The Civic Type R is an enthusiast-focused proposition that accounts for only a small percentage of European sales.
