Most men are susceptible to erectile dysfunction (ED) at some point in their lives, but almost all men who participated in Well Pharmacy research
(91 percent), said they felt a sense of shame about the condition, with 62 percent saying the pleasant narrative of “carrying on” adds to the silence.
In fact, only nine percent of men surveyed had told a loved one or health specialist about the disease.
One man who has experienced this is Antony Cunningham-Smith, 52, from Bournemouth.
Antony was a nurse for 23 years and chose to quit the job he loved following a diagnosis of epilepsy. He was shocked when the drugs he was given prevented him from
to have an erection. A married man with one child, he felt stigmatized and found it hard to tell anyone.
“The biggest issue around this condition is the silence surrounding it. I felt ‘lesser’ and despite working as a nurse for over two decades, I didn’t want to talk about it. It started
form a silence in my marriage and had a huge impact on my self-esteem.
“Eventually I told my pharmacist about it as part of a medication review. They were so helpful and really put me at ease. Any guy in trouble, you have to embarrass I know it’s hard to talk about this, but so is erectile dysfunction.
He continued: “I have great friends, but it’s not something you can mention in the pub. I didn’t want to be the brunt of the joke – but talking to a pharmacist in a private room really
helped me. I have since found a treatment that works and life is good again.
