In a tweet, the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said 16 hotel staff had been affected, with two taken to hospital and the other 14 being monitored.

The fire service and police were called to the Novotel at Fishergate shortly before 3:30 pm Image: Google.

They added that the leak had been confirmed to be chlorine and had been contained.

It is understood that the building was evacuated as a precaution and police advised people to stay away from the area to avoid a buildup of traffic in the surrounding area.

Last month, nearly 30 people were hospitalized with breathing difficulties after a similar incident when a “large amount of chlorine gas” leaked into the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in east London.
