A ‘hovering ship’ pictured off Peacehaven Brighton News

A PHOTO appearing to show a ship “hovering over the sea” has been captured off the coast.

The optical illusion was taken by Danny Russell from the Bastion steps in Peacehaven.

Danny, who lives in Brighton, looked out to sea and saw the boat seemingly soaring through the air on Good Friday.

There are differing opinions on the causes of the effect, with scientists explaining it as a mirage caused by the bending of light.

In March last year, a photograph of a ship appearing to float in the sky was taken in Falmouth, Cornwall.

The image went viral and people took to social media to speculate on what could have caused the strange phenomena.

Meteorologist David Braine told the BBC that the “upper mirage” occurred due to “special atmospheric conditions that bend light”.

He said that although common in the Arctic, the illusion only occurred “very rarely” in the UK.

David told the broadcaster: “Upper mirages occur due to the weather pattern known as a temperature inversion, where cold air sits close to the sea with warmer air above it.

“Because cold air is denser than warm air, it deflects light toward the eyes of someone standing on the ground or on the coast, changing the appearance of a distant object.”
