EuroMillions: These are some of the National Lottery winners from all over Yorkshire Yorkshire News

Senior Advisor to Camelot Winners at The National Lottery, Andy Carter, said: “This is absolutely incredible news. History was made last night with the largest ever National Lottery prize ever won by a single UK ticket holder, and we are delighted that ‘I have now received a claim’.

Winners Joe and Jess Thwaite are from Gloucester and won on a Lucky Dip ticket, but we wanted to know how Yorkshire has fared over the years since the Lottery started in 1994.

By October 2015, 356 Yorkshiremen had become millionaires and together they had won a billion, and September of the same year marked the 4,000th lottery winner nationwide.

Harrogate residents shared a £240,000 lottery prize in 2021.

A group of eight Harrogate neighbors won a cash prize of £30,000 each thanks to their postcode.

The windfall came after HG3 2TZ was announced as a winner with the Town Postcode Lottery on Thursday, January 14.

The Village Postcode Lottery is a subscription lottery that costs £10 per month to play. People play with their chosen zip code and are automatically entered into all draws.

At least 33 per cent of the ticket price goes to a good cause and Town Postcode Lottery players have raised over £750m to date for charities and organisations.

Among the winners were father and son Bill and Martin Barnett, who live on Bramham Drive, Harrogate.

They found out about the win on video calls with People’s Postcode Lottery Ambassador Jeff Brazier.

Bill, 67, who was joined on the call by his wife Marie, was quick to respond when the prize amount was revealed. He said, “Wow! Many thanks. Handsome!”

Leeds-born Alex Best won a whopping £1 million thanks to the National Lottery in 2018.

After paying off his student loan from the University of Bolton, buying a house and buying his first car, Alex set out to pursue his career dreams by using the money to find work in the music industry.

Best took a £10-an-hour job at Flamingo Land theme park, North Yorkshire, to gain experience producing shows, before starting his own business as a sound engineer a year later.

Speaking about his career ambitions, Alex told the National Lottery: “I love going to music festivals and concerts and my degree has helped me realize what I want to do as a career. It’s what I love to do, I look forward to touring with big music stars or working at festivals like Glastonbury.”

Lottery winner Trish Emson de Wath won £1.7m in October 2003, but vowed to keep her feet on the ground: in 2015 she was working as a lunchroom helper at her son Benjamin’s school.

And in 2007, lucky cashier Karen Child from Derbyshire cashed in a prize of £8.4m.

Clowne-based Child, who won millions in the National Lottery in 2007, has formed his own charity called The Child Foundation, which supports children and families who have faced illness or hardship in their lives.

South Yorkshire is home to one of the luckiest cities, Sheffield, in Britain when it comes to hitting the jackpot, with at least 70 new millionaires stepping up since 1994 in Steel City alone.

South Yorkshire’s best-known winners are philanthropic couple Ray and Barbara Wragg, who won £7.6m in 2000 and donated over £5m to friends, family and charities.

They also quit their jobs immediately, Ray’s as a construction company supervisor and Barbara’s as a night shift worker at Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

Mr. Wragg recounted what it was like to break the news to his boss the day after his 2000 victory, saying: “When I told him I had won, he said, ‘That reminds me, I need to check my ticket.’ I said ‘don’t bother Dave, I won everything'”.

The pair went on a cruise after the win, which Wragg said they “loved.” At the time they were thinking of buying the town hall house they lived in, but ended up with an even more luxurious property in Steel City.

The couple lived a nice life, but became affectionately known as the ‘Lottery Angels’ as they donated most of their winnings to good causes.

Sadly, Barbara passed away in 2018 at the age of 77; ever since, her husband Ray has been fulfilling his wife’s wishes to live life to the fullest on her earnings.

Sheffield hairdresser Deana Sampson has also swapped her town hall home for a luxury conversion in Baslow after landing £5.4m. She had just £3.60 in her bank accounts when she matched her numbers in 1996. Her first purchase was a new pair of trainers.

In March 2018, a syndicate of 19 Sheffield couriers scooped a £228,000 EuroMillions jackpot, each pocketing…
