CNN’s multi-award-winning chief international correspondent also advises aspiring war journalists: “If you’re a picky eater, go home, because you’re not going to last.”
Speaking on the latest episode of the food and drink podcast Biting Talk, Ward celebrates the release of his book, On all fronts: educating a journalist. Having filed reports from Iraq to Syria and Afghanistan to Egypt, she reflects on the food that has sustained her during her extraordinary career.
“You have to be prepared to literally eat whatever is put in front of you,” she said, adding that “it is partly for survival and partly for politeness.”
Ward says she was “an activist” for wrapping certain food items, such as granola bars and her beloved Snickers who, she says, “make a great breakfast with Arabic coffee.”
