Londoners urged to register to vote as deadline approaches UK News

Londoners are urged to register to vote in the GLA elections before tonight’s deadline.

Those who wish to decide the next mayor of London and members of the London Assembly have until 11:59 p.m. tonight (April 19) to register to vote.

Anyone wishing to vote by mail in the May 6 election must also download and return a completed form to their local voter registration office by 5 p.m. tomorrow (April 20).

Despite Covid-19 restrictions, polling stations will be open as usual from 7 a.m. on May 6, although measures are in place to ensure that social distancing is maintained.

A recent poll by Redfield and Wilton found that only 40% of Londoners said they were ‘sure’ to vote on May 6, while 25% said they would vote ‘probably’.

The last London mayor election in 2016 saw a turnout of 45.3%, an increase from just 38.1% in 2012.

Voters will have to wait two days this year for the results of the London Mayor and Assembly elections, with the tally taking place over two days to allow for social distancing.

The results are expected to be announced at City Hall on the evening of May 8.
