Worst areas in Hertfordshire for Covid fines UK News

Hertsmere is among the two worst areas in Hertfordshire for fines linked to violation of Covid restrictions, the latest figures have revealed.

Since the announcement of the country’s second lockdown in November, 89 sanctions have been handed down until March 1 for ignoring rules on travel, gatherings and social distancing.

Only Welwyn Hatfield (102) had a higher total among the 10 boroughs, with Watford third at 78.

Fines range from £ 200 for the original infractions to £ 10,000 for repeat offenders – including a man from Watford who has hosted several parties at Vicarage Road.

Herts Police Superintendent Sue Jameson said: ‘Fortunately the vast majority of people in Hertfordshire did the right thing and followed the rules so that our officers did not need to issue large numbers of ‘notice of fixed penalty.

“On a few occasions it has been necessary to impose fines, for example on a large group of people socializing together indoors – clearly a blatant violation of the lockdown restrictions.”

She also urged people to obey the current rules and not to socialize indoors.

Elsewhere in Hertfordshire 61 fines were imposed at Broxbourne, Stevenage had 54 and St Albans 48.

They were followed by North Herts (20), East Herts (11), Three Rivers (11) and Dacorum (9).

A police spokesperson said: “Officers continue to be present in communities – engaging, explaining and encouraging people to act responsibly and follow the rules on coronaviruses.

“Coercive measures are a last resort. We are working with local authorities, licensing authorities, COVID commissioners and businesses to facilitate the lockdown. ”

She added that people can report rule breakers online or by calling the non-urgent number 101.
