An 86-year-old man said he had “plenty of years on the clock” as he considered a 1,000-mile walking challenge covering Barnet, Enfield and Haringey.
Peter Murray will tackle the march to benefit the North London Hospice after being inspired by Captain Tom Moore’s fundraiser for the NHS.
“I love to walk,” said the 86-year-old. “It brings me out and I meet a lot of lovely people and tell them why I’m doing it.
“I adopt the slow walk of a legionnaire, which saves energy.
“Even though I tend to push my wife’s cart or a wheelchair to give me a little more stability, I can still go up to 30 miles a day.”
True to his word, the former businessman began his new journey at the start of National Walking Month, which he hopes will raise thousands of pounds for the hospice which looked after the hospice. ‘one of his sisters.
The father of six, born in Ireland and moved to London in 1950, will take several months to complete his epic challenge.
He plans to walk three times a week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and divide the distance into sections in Barnet, Enfield and Haringey – areas the hospice supports.
Peter, who lives in London with his wife Helen, added: “I have been a supporter of the North London Hospice for many years.
“I used to collect donation bags and deliver them to my local charity shop.
“My three sisters received care in a hospice and I saw the incredible support they provide to families.
He continued: “I knew I was going to do my next walk to the North London Hospice and I hope people donate when they see me outside or are inspired to take on their own challenges.
“You are never too old!”
It comes after Peter already completed a 1,000 mile walk to benefit Whipps Cross Hospital in December.
People can follow his progress on the hospice’s social networks or on Peter’s Facebook page “petermurraycastlebar”.
He will let his followers know where he is going to walk so they can wave to him.
