Martin Bashir used “deceptive behavior” to secure his landmark interview with Princess Diana in 1995, according to an official investigation.

Lord Dyson’s report concluded that the journalist had violated BBC rules by faking fake bank statements and showing them to DianeEarl Spencer’s brother to gain access to the princess.

And the investigation also said the company covered up Mr. Bashir’s behavior and “failed to meet high standards of integrity and transparency.”

The BBC says it is offering a “full and unconditional apology” and also sent a letter of apology to Diana’s son Prince William following the publication of the report.

What did Diana’s brother claim?

Earl Spencer claimed that in the weeks leading up to the program, Mr Bashir showed him fake bank statements related to alleged payments made to his sister’s former private secretary Patrick Jephson and another former royals by security services.

The documents incorrectly suggested that individuals were paid to keep the princess under surveillance.

Mr. Bashir also showed him mock documents, relating to a former employee of the Earl, which Mr. Bashir also used in an attempt to gain access to the princess.

• Mr Bashir ordered fake bank statements from graphic designer Matt Wiessler, allegedly showing payments from Penfolds Consultants and News International to the bank account of Alan Waller, a former employee of Earl Spencer
