Sarah Everard died of a neck compression, police said.
The finding was made during a post-mortem examination on the death of the 33 Years, who went missing on March 3 on his way home to Clapham, in the south London.
A major police investigation was opened and his body was found a week later in a forest in Kent.
Metropolitan Police said on Tuesday: “A post-mortem examination into the death of Sarah Everard held at William Harvey Hospital in Ashford gave the cause of death from compression of the neck.
“Sarah’s family have been informed and are supported by specialist officers.”
Wayne Couzens, 48, Metropolitan Police officer on duty, from Deal, Kent, was charged with kidnapping and murder.
A tentative date has been set for his trial in October.
