OCD will say some, but for me it was a disturbing indication of how The Royal Foresters at Ascot, one of the Oakman Group’s upscale boutique hotels, strives for perfection and guest enjoyment.
A bed covered with a multitude of pillows and cushions, a wall-mounted 49-inch LG flat-screen TV, a Roberts digital radio, a Nespresso coffee maker with free pods, and a fully-stocked minibar are all part of a lavish bedroom, juxtaposed with a beautiful and unique ultramodern bathroom with walk-in shower, with a choice of two heads.
Our room is on the first floor, our mini balcony offers a beautiful view of the hotel patio where many satisfied customers soak up the sun with their drinks and dishes from the hotel’s well-stocked menu.
The hotel does not have an elevator, but there are disabled rooms on the ground floor with wheelchair-friendly doors and wheelchair-accessible showers.
The aforementioned emphasis on detail is also reflected in the hotel’s popular restaurant, which has an ever-growing reputation, confirmed by the number of people I have seen patiently waiting to be seated in the elegant restaurant. inside or under the deliciously lit and heated awnings. on the vast atmospheric patio.
An open kitchen frames a haze of chefs spinning side-to-side at 100 mph creating a plethora of mouth-watering dishes from the hotel’s fixed lunch and dinner menu, and daily specials for that added choice.
The staff are professional, efficient and pleasant and very attentive to the needs of the guests. I opted for the HLT for my lunch, a generous grilled halloumi, lettuce and farmhouse mayonnaise sandwich, accompanied by incredible triple cooked fries.
In the evening, the plate of choice for me and my wife was the rump of lamb marinated in oregano, served with new potatoes in sea salt and mint butter, Fior Di Ricotta, green beans, caramelized onions, sundried tomatoes, arugula and drizzled with basil pesto. Simply delicious. My daughter opted for the pork belly, slowly roasted in cider and finished under the grill with mashed potatoes, green beans, savoy cabbage, peas, applesauce, a massive piece of crackers and sauce. I’m sure it was just as delicious!
Our dishes cost £ 9.50 for the HLT, £ 18 for the lamb rump with oregano and £ 16.50 for the pork belly. We opted for the Moraleda Chardonnay as the perfect accompaniment, a big and bold wine with tropical fruit flavors and a hint of vanilla, priced at £ 27 a bottle.
And breakfast is not to be sniffed at. Showcasing local produce, this was arguably the best Full English I’ve ever had. Everything on the breakfast menu is included in the price of the B&B.
It’s hard to suggest where the hotel could improve – an extendable shaving mirror would help, as the modern circular sink means you have to lean over the wall mirror, but it’s really finicky.
It was a wonderful and relaxing break which, keeping the racing lingo, will clearly remain one of my favorites.
A double room with breakfast at the Royal Foresters starts from £ 131 which, given its top quality, means you get more for your money in my opinion.
But the news is improving. If you’re under the starter’s orders and get out of the trap quickly, the Oakman Group is currently offering a 33% discount on breaks taken before June 30, which means a night’s bed and breakfast is available from from £ 99.
Things to do around Ascot
It’s not all about horse racing! While Ascot High Street is very small, the nearby towns of Bracknell and Windsor are more than enough to cater to the most voracious shoppers and are only a short drive away. We had a lovely day in Windsor – where Eton Public School is located – where we enjoyed the popular Windsor Duck Tour – is it a bus, is it a boat – it is both! Yes, a visit on the Thames in the capable hands of driver Paul and experienced guide AG made a good start to our day.

Last but not least was a visit to Windsor Castle – the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. Founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, it has since been the home of 39 monarchs. Today, the Queen spends most of her private weekends at the castle.
Visit St George’s Chapel and stand where Harry and Meghan got married, as well as the stone under which the tomb of King Henry VIII himself is located!
And then there are the many plush rooms filled with exotic treasures and collections – an experience like no other.
