FOOTBALL fans have been warned they could face jail time if they get behind the wheel as they exceed the limit during Euro 2020.
It follows the launch of the annual police crackdown on alcohol and drug drivers, where offenders in Sussex are expected to be named and humiliated.
Anyone caught breaking the rules could face a driving ban of at least 12 months, unlimited fines and even possible jail time.
The crackdown is aimed at ensuring the safety of all road users and at taking decisive action against those who put their lives and the lives of others at risk.
Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne said: ‘I am always appalled by the number of people who choose to get behind the wheel of their vehicles while under the influence of alcohol and / or drugs.
“It’s not just reckless, it’s totally irresponsible. Those who kill or seriously injure others while exceeding the limit should not doubt that they will face the legal and social consequences of their actions.
“With the football season in full swing and sunny summer weather to enjoy it, we need to make sure we take responsibility for our actions when we socialize.
“The message is clear: drink or drive; don’t take the risk and do both, even if you’ve only had one drink.
The dedicated campaign runs from Friday June 11 to Sunday July 11, and is in addition to routine traffic policing 365 days a year.
In line with previous campaigns, the identity of anyone arrested for drunk driving or drug use during this period and subsequently convicted will be posted on the Sussex Police website and on social media.
Chief Inspector Michael Hodder, of the Surrey and Sussex Roads Police Unit, said: “We hope that by maximizing the publication of this campaign people will think twice about their actions.
“We appreciate that the vast majority of motorists are safe and competent road users, but there is still a minority who ignore our advice and risk lives.”
“Our advice to everyone – whether you’re watching football or hanging out with friends or family this summer – is drink or drive; never both.
“Think about it before you get behind the wheel. Don’t let your next trip be the last.
The consequences of drunk or drugged driving have been listed below:
