Euro 2020: Wales beat Turkey 2-0 in Baku despite missing penalty by Bale | UK News

Wales beat Turkey 2-0 in their second Euro 2020 game thanks to goals from Aaron Ramsey and Connor Roberts.

Ramsey controlled a superb pass from Gareth Bale and returned the ball at close range in the 43rd minute.

Bale then lost a glorious opportunity to double the lead when he lifted a penalty well over the bar after the break.

But Roberts scored deep in added time to secure three points for the Welsh in a tense final.

Wales have four points in their first two Group A matches with whimsical Italy ahead on Sunday.

The top two teams from each of the six groups will advance to the round of 16 with the top four teams in third place.

Wales played much more aggressively than in their opening draw with Switzerland and could have won by more if Ramsey, in particular, had been more precise in his finish.

The Turks, who lost their first two matches, were roared by most of the nearly 20,000 spectators in the Azerbaijani capital.

Traveling fans and many locals in the closely-knit country created an intimidating atmosphere, but Welsh captain Bale said it helped him and his teammates.

“The fans were fantastic,” he told the BBC, “most of them were Turkish, but the Welsh fans were amazing too.

“They made some noise and they made us continue.”

Asked if progress to the Round of 16 is now secure, Bale said: “You would like to think so, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

“If you had offered us four points [from two games] at first, your hand would have been torn off.

“It’s an important victory which puts us in a great position.”

Wales lead the standings, one point ahead of Italy.
