A new special edition £ 5 coin has been issued by the Royal Mint to celebrate the life of The Duke of Edinburgh.
The coin, which was unveiled by Chancellor Rishi Sunak, was approved by the Duke before his death in April this year.
A beautiful tribute
Prince Philip personally approved the coin in 2008, which features an original portrait of the Duke and will be minted by the Royal Mint.
The design was drawn by artist Ian Rank-Broadley and bears the inscription “HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh 1921-2021”.
The coin, launched on Saturday June 26 on Armed Forces Day, is available for purchase on the Royal Mint website, as well as at UK post offices and specialist retailers in the Commonwealth and of the whole world.
The Royal Mint will also donate £ 50,000 to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to support its community work in the UK and abroad.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak described the play as a “fitting tribute” to the Duke, especially since it was released on Armed Forces Day.
He said: “This coin is a fitting tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh, who has moved and inspired so many around the world with his decades of service to both the nation and to Her Majesty the Queen.
“I am proud to unveil the coin on Armed Forces Day, given his distinguished naval career and unwavering dedication to our monarch and his royal duties, and it is fitting that he and the Queen are represented together on both sides. “
The coin is legal tender, but was intended as a limited edition collector’s item or gift and will not enter general circulation.
Anne Jessopp, Managing Director of the Royal Mint, added: “Since the Duke of Edinburgh passed away in April, many have said he has led a life well lived.
“He was the longest-serving husband in British history and the patron or chairman of over 750 organizations, including the Royal Mint Advisory Board.
“The Royal Mint has marked important royal events for centuries and is honored to unveil an original new coin that celebrates the life and legacy of a remarkable man.
“It seems appropriate that this coin – which was personally endorsed by the Prince – also supports the work of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards.
“The awards have benefited millions of young people since their inception in 1956, and are perhaps Prince Philip’s greatest legacy. “
Oldest British Consort
Prince Philip was born on June 10, 1921 and died at the age of 99 on April 9, 2021.
He was married to Queen Elizabeth II for 73 years and was the longest-serving husband in British history.
Together they had four children, Prince Charles, now Prince of Wales, Princess Anne, now Princess Royal, Prince Andrew, now Duke of York, and Prince Edward, now Earl of Wessex.
The Duke devoted decades of his life to royal duty and is known to have supported the Queen throughout her reign, served the nation alongside her, and completed thousands of royal engagements.
He has been involved with hundreds of charities and set up the Duke of Edinburgh’s Prize Youth Adventure Program, and also served as Chairman of the Royal Mint Advisory Board for 47 years.
How to get a coin
The commemorative coin is available for purchase on the Royal Mint’s website, as well as at UK post offices and special dealers in the Commonwealth and around the world.
The brilliant uncirculated coin is priced at £ 13, while a limited edition silver and gold coin is also available. These are priced at £ 92.50 and £ 2,650 respectively.
