Christopher Doyley, 50, was released from Hollesley Bay prison on a temporary release permit, but failed to meet on Wednesday at an agreed location in Ipswich town center.
Mr Doyley is serving six years and six months for attempted grievous bodily harm, assault and possession of a blade object in a public place, Suffolk Police said.
Force described Doyley as black, six feet tall, of medium build, with brown eyes, dark hair and a close shave. It has ties to South East London.
The public is warned not to approach Mr. Doyley and to call the police immediately.
