Ritchie Blackmore: Deep Purple guitarist could be commemorated in Somerset Bath City News

A petition has been launched to ask for a plaque to be installed in the hometown of world famous guitarist Ritchie Blackmore.

The Deep Purple star was born at Allendale Nursing Home in Weston-super-Mare and lived there for the first few years of her life.

In 1947, his family moved to London, but it seems the people of Weston have not forgotten their famous former resident.

Weston resident John Cadwalader started the petition and it has already received over two thousand signatures.

He said, “I would like your help in erecting a prestigious blue plaque in honor of the god of rock and son of Weston-super-Mare, Ritchie Blackmore.”

Weston City Council funds and installs blue plaques dedicated to famous people with connections to the city.

Plates already installed include those of Roald Dahl, Haile Selassie and General Dwight Eisenhower.

The blue plaques, which date back to the mid-1800s, are used to represent the connections between old British buildings and their famous names from the past and present.

Cadwalader aims to persuade Councilor John Crockford Hawley, who heads the committee that delegates the blue plates, to give the idea the green light.

The petition is said to have the support of Blackmore, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.

SomersetLive launched WestonSuperMareLive to provide dedicated media coverage of the city.
