The most reliable new and near-new cars have been named, with the UK’s cheapest car among star vehicles surpassing some of the biggest premium names.

The Dacia Sandero, officially the cheapest new car on sale in the UK, was among six models to achieve a 100% Perfect Reliability rating in the annual What Car? Study, with Dacia as the brand ranking second behind Lexus, the top performing regular.

The 2013-2020 Sandero was joined by the Audi TT, Mazda CX-3, Mini Cabriolet, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross and Honda HR-V as the most reliable models in the country, according to the survey of more than 16,000 motorists.

Which car? The study asked owners of cars less than five years old about their experiences over the past 12 months, including reports of any faults or breakdowns as well as the time and cost required to resolve the problem.

Twenty percent of drivers said they had encountered a problem with their car in the past year, 85 percent of which was corrected for free by the manufacturer.

The study looked at 178 models from 30 brands and the top six models all came back with a completely clean health record, finishing first in their respective segments.

As a brand, Lexus achieved an almost perfect score of 98.7 percent. Its NX SUV topped the hybrid category – the segment with the best overall record – with a score of 99.8 percent.

Despite being the opposite of Lexus, Romanian budget brand Dacia took second place in the table with a score of 97.3%, just ahead of Suzuki and Hyundai at 97.1.

Hybrids were determined to be the most reliable category, with an overall rating of 96.9%.

Conversely, luxury SUVs do poorly overall, with an average score of 88.8%, although the Porsche Macan achieved an honorable score of 97.9%. The Land Rover Discovery obtained the lowest score in this category with a result of 72.1%.

Land Rover as a brand performed relatively poorly in the survey, with its 82.5% rating earning it second from last place on the list, just above Fiat, which was ranked lowest. reliable with a score of 82%.

However, the Nissan X-Trail was rated as the least reliable model overall, with a reliability rating of only 59.7%. The Discovery was the second least reliable model, just ahead of the Porsche 718 Cayman (73.5%), the Volkswagen Touran (74.1%) and the Ford Fiesta (74.9%).
