Ron Pember: Tributes to Only Fools and Horses and the Secret Army star UK News

Famous for his roles in Only Fools and Horses, Secret Army and more, the star’s death was announced online in a moving tribute from his grandson Paul Pember.

Sharing several photos from his acting career, the tribute reads, “‘Sadness now is happiness then. That’s the problem.’ 11.04.1934 – 08.03.2022 #ronpember #grandfather.”

In addition to his storied acting and directing career, Ron Pember also played Belgian Resistance fighter Alain Muny from 1977 to 1979 in the BBC drama series Secret Army.

The official Only Fools & Horses Appreciation Society Twitter account said: “We are saddened to hear the news of the death of Ron Pember who played Baz in the Series 3 episode ‘Homesick’ Our thoughts and wishes warm go to his family and friends.”

Other accolades for the actor include writing a musical about Jack the Ripper’s killing spree and playing Dennis Timson on the legal drama series Rumpole of the Bailey for six years.

The star retired after suffering a stroke in 1992 and moved to Southend-on-Sea.

Celebrities and fans have paid tribute to the popular actor online, with one describing him as “a true legend”.

Danny John-Jules, who played Cat in Red Dwarf, said: “Just heard the sad news that Ron Pember passed away. (Tuesday) He was such a gentleman to us, when he appeared on #RedDwarf. He just stuck his tongue firmly in his cheek and joined the party! What a legend. RIP.

Meanwhile, the official Red Dwarf Fan Club page said: “We are very saddened to learn of the passing of Ron Pember. the IRS in #BetterThanLife. RIP.”

Ron, who was born in Plaistow, Essex, performed with the National Theater Company from 1965 to 1968 and was heavily involved in acting and directing at the Mermaid Theater in London.

One fan said: “The kind of career any actor would dream of – he was in practically everything. 1969’s final Avengers episode Bizarre And for Doctor Who – on the radio in Slipback as Seedle.”

Another added: “I play the bad guy so often it’s so adorable and funny and sweet in real life.”
